Activity

I teach chemistry and we work many problems in class.  When a student has trouble with solving a problem, I plan to use more questioning to lead the student to solving the problem rather than just showing them how to do it.

I plan to use a learning styles questionaire in the first few days of class to adjust my teaching.

I plan to use backwards chaining to help students learn how to name ionic, covalent, acidic, and hydrated compounds.  I will present them with different compounds and their names, then ask them what they notice about the names and where on the periodic table the elements are located.  I am hoping this will work better to introduce the knowlege than just memorizing how to name.

I learned how important the debriefing process is.  Often we run out of class time and neglect the debriefing since there is so much content to cover.  I plan to make the debriefing a necessary part of the learning process.  I will also be looking into some alpha music for during group work.  Chemistry can be frustrating for some students and this might help.

I like the post about having students write descriptors with each letter of their name.  This will help me get to know them better and remember their name.

I liked the Minute papers idea.  It also lets me know how well I conveyed the information for the day.

I liked the airplane team building activity.  It allows them to get to know eachother and learn how to collaborate.  It allows me to also observe how well they collaborate and who are potential leaders.

I plan to implement shorter lectures on content and break it up with activities to apply the content to account for the 15-18 minute attention spans.  I also plan to give Kahoot checks for understanding and Knewton Alta quizzes with multiple attempts during a given chapter.

I learned my 3 roles:  model, manage and motivate.  I also learned that I need to adopt a teaching style that fits my own personality and the needs of the students.

I learned about the three domains and how each are important.  A student's soft skills are just as important as being able to learn and apply content, the cognitive domain.  I had also never seen Bloom's Taxonomy and the pyramid, since my degree is not in teaching.  The Bloom pyramid really made me think about how students are able to progress in their learning level of a given concept.  I learned that students can be involved in the process of setting objectives.  I plan to take the following action steps for my classroom: 1.  Assigning 1 pt per class for… >>>
