About me

I spent about 25 years as a journalist. I was a reporter, editor and columnist for various newspapers around the country, most recently the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. Since leaving journalism, I have been an educator and a consultant. I worked for Jerry Thomas Public Relations, where I was Vice President, for three years. Then I started my own company, GTB Communications. GTB has served a number of clients, advising their executives on everything from maintaining a Facebook page to preparing for TV interviews. But the most rewarding thing I have done since leaving journalism is teach. In addition to teaching at ECPI, I have taught at the University of Phoenix and Saint Augustine's University. At Saint Augustine's, I chair the Media & Communications Department. I have been married for 23 years and have two daughters, one a sophomore in college and another who is a senior in high school

Comment on Susan Larsen's post: Do you find it challenging to make changes though? We have to start from scratch with every course so it takes hours to set up the basic shell -- time we could be using to change and improve the shell.

I will seek a peer evaluation of my online course

Comment on James Hamburg's post: I've always used peer feedback but I haven't made it anonymous -- I will start doing that

Feedback is essential and it should be clearly tied to the rubric

Comment on Lucas Carr's post: I agree but many students simply don't want to participate -- that's a challenge

Good scaffolding builds on what students already know and are familiar with.

Comment on Stephanie Cox's post: Yeah, there's a reason social media videos are like 30 seconds LOL

Consistency is important in an LMS. Learning is facilitated when, say, all video links are formatted consistently. Learning objects should present information in easily digestible chunks.

I have noticed a type of learner who seems to have experienced a lot of unfairness in life and thinks you are treating them unfairly. It's difficult to strike a balance between being firm and being understanding. I'm wondering if others have encountered that type of learner and how they handle it.

Learning comes down to personalities as much as intelligence. We have to be aware of and learn to deal with personalities that disrupt or avoid learning.
