To allow time for socializing prior to starting your session, I guess I really hadn't added that to the equation.  Also Asynchronous meetings vs. synchonous meetings. 

The importance of a broad introduction with biographical information for both yourself as the instructor as well as your students.  Make sure to have a separate area for "general questions" in addition to the "course based" question area.

I have learned that teaching online requires just as much (if not more) involvement with each individual student as opposed to the "group" as teaching in a face to face setting.  The challenges can be met with proper planning and delivery. Orientation is crucial and directly related to the success of students as well as instructors.
