Since it is an art class it is very useful. The studnets use them to listen to music to keep their flow going, look at art on the internet, keep up with the news in art, etc...

I monitor the studnets, if they play a video to watch I make sure it's break time, or that they are caught up on their work.

What site Ryan?
It's hassle free, and I've seen in my own classes that most students won't try and cheat by using the browser. They will be too scared to be caught. Then there are the brave ones that cheat. But the way i see it, they are seeking out the answers!!! They may even remember what they just learned by doing so! :-)

I haven't done this yet but I'm seriously thinking about doing it.
Most of my classes I teach, web design & App Design, need smart phones to understand the ways of Apps in order to design correctly for them, and to see how a web site works on a desktop browser compared to a smart phone.
Due to catching up with newest technologies. I've had to revamp my Photoshop & Web Design classes many times over. Easier ways to do something in Photoshop. I would teach one way to do it, then a student that come in my class says I know how to do it a simpler way, I ask for his/her knowledge and we all benefit from it! The students feels like they are on top of the world because they taught their teacher something :)
We asked to not become friends with our students on Facebook because it is unprofessional. I see the advantage and disadvantages. Advantage?: i look more professional and unobtainable. Disadvantage: I want the students to know I'm a real person, that I do the same 'work' they will eventually find jobs for, and can help them succeed if connected to them.
Even though I'm 44 and teach Photoshop & Web Design, I'm a Gen X'er, but totally get into the Gen Y'er mode of technology, I love it! I even see the multi tasking part of the Gen Y'er in me over the past 5 years, I can't stay on one thing and focus I need to check Google for a other thing I'm doing, and check my email for my web design clients, while I'm grading a class I just taught.

I understand that iPhones are a way of life for Gen Y As long as I see the student working in class and get the work done, usually the students that get the work done first have time waiting for the slower students to catch up with a lesson, I tell them they can work on homework, or use their iphone as reward. When students not getting their work done use their iphones I ask the to stop and do the work.

I get stressed a little when I hear I'll be watched as I instruct to do the yearly 'watch' of teachers to make sure they are doing well. I know I am, it just a added stressor. I try not to think about them coming in because I know I'm already a great teacher, and do my 'thing'.
