About me

Activity

I will go through each class I am teaching and create some active learning based assignments. I will use the group projects.

I have a different vierw on late work for my  online classes . We have 5 week modules for out classes and I usually let students go back to week one and resubmit any assisgnment that they did not receive full credit for. they can add to discussions and correct assignments but cannot retake quizzes. I look at it as they learn from their mistakes and when they have to go back and correct an answer it helps with comprehension of the work. Does anyone else do this?

I think it is great to use active learning but I have problems even getting students to participate at all. I spend time calling them to offer assistance and to keep them active so they are not dropped form the program. Any suggestions to help

We have instructors that are not on site at the school and are contractual so that those of us that are stationed at the school look at over all retention and reach out to the students as if we are student services to see if we can get them to be active in their classes.

Thanks for validating what I was thinking. As much as I love teaching I know most of my students took the class due to not wanting the face to face or constant contact. Most times students are happy that I am checking in on them but I have had those that are not. Part of our retention is that we call other instructors students and that's where it gets tricky as students don't want to hear from anyone other than their instructor. All I do is encourage them to submit work as stay active so they are not dropped form… >>>

Good point Dan. As an instructor I do focus on good communication but the fact that I am responsible with student services reps to contact students I worry that they get frustrated with all the different people calling encouraging them to participate. I must say that I do find it hard to believe if you sign up for a class you don't participate. Thanks for the feedback!

I totally agree Michael but I was thinking more that part of my job, as an instructor, is class retention and I usually either email or call every other day when a student is not participating or submitting work. Per our accreditation students need to submit work or after 12 days are to be dropped form the program so I try to reach out to the students that are having difficulties to see if there is something I can do to assist them and get them to participate in class. Is there a better way to handle retention without having… >>>

I was wondering if anyone has ever felt like they are communicating too much with a student. For example, besides grading papers or answering discussions at our school we are responsible for our student retention. If I have a student who is failing or not participating we are encouraged to contact them often. I usually either call or email every other day to see if I can get student to participate. We have accrediting guidelines that a student must submit work at least every week, or sooner if possible. We, as instructors, are calling students as well as our student… >>>
