bringing home problems to class this is a difficult problem to deal with the damage this causes sometimes can not be undone just think of some of the things that go on at home and look at your students divorce money problems pregancies drugs when you enter into dialog with a student on any of these subjects it can get real nasty real fast

unfocused students

this will be an ongoing problem as long as we have schools what I see has to be done is put the pride to do well on the student if you make the student feel good about himself show a genuine interest in what he has and is acomplishing you would be surprised how focused these students will become

expectation and requirment

when giving the expectation and requirements make sure that the student understands all of the who why and how grade consistant and fairly answer questions frankly with as much detail as possible It seems to me that some instructors expect the student to know how to do tasks without demos and if they can do that then why are they in school don't get pulled into that frame of mind

starting the new class can always be a challenge if the class setting is fun the instructor honest and sincere. show the student you care but have class control don't be a tyrant but be strict you can always loosen up but being their friend right off the bat is usually a mistake

Building Rapport

When discussing your own carreer paths with students don't just talk about the good stuff talk about your own short comings your own failures this let's the student know that we don't do it right all the time

motivation

i have found that if a student is beging to lose the spark the drive the ambition what ever is was that caused the excitement in the beging is easy to recindle and get the excitment going again just get them to talk

when you tell personal experiences what you have done in the field why you took this career path instead of another these are all motivaters the one thing I can't stress enough is you need to talk failures as well as achivements

retention

once we give the lecture I have found that I do the demo they do the same procedure I go over what was right what was wrong then they do it again and I grade on that procedure They have a good understanding of what is going on they fell confident and I can grade with confidence that they know it or they don't and I believe it's a fair grade

student frustrations and retention

I have found most students try to pick up where they were in high school that's the only behavior they are faimilar with. some adjust right away and some take longer. Student need to be reasured from the begining that we understand that this is a change for them. First time away from home not the popular person on campus best friends have moved on. In most cases they have to find a job put up with room mates do their own cooking and laundry pay bills. when you are put in these situations for the first time it's easier… >>>
