Ditto on what everyone else has said. Time,patience,recorders if possible are good ways to help students comprehend the lessons. Having experience with a dyslexic child helps me in my classroom. I try to rephrase critical points in several different ways and/or making specific eye contact with those particular students with learning disabilities to make sure they have understood or need more information.
I encourage all students ( English speaking or not ) to ask me if they do not understand what the word or phrase means. There are English-as-first-language students that only have a rudimentary grasp of words so I always try to spot the ones that are struggling no matter what the reason. I give the option to ask in class or catch me afterwards to explain and also try to keep an eye on them during test time.

The field I come from constantly grades us on customer retention/satisfaction......surveys for Customer Satisfaction Index a.k.a. CSI. I tell my students that the only way I could help customers was to approach their problem as though it were MY problem . This allowed me to detach myself(usually!) from customers screaming and yelling at times.I tried to see the problem from their point of view. I try to use the same approach in my classroom....if my student has an academic problem I will help with tutoring,questions,slowing down whatever it takes for them to understand and it has seemed to help keep… >>>

I teach a somewhat dry subject matter so my students tend to get bored quickly. Adding humorous stories from the field keeps them attentive and asking questions. I do NOT use vulgar or clownish stories but real life anecdotes from customers I have known.
