I have learned there are different types (labels) of learners as to how they respond to discussion forums. I also was surprised that e-mail is the most preferred method of communication between students and teachers. I would have thought a personal phone-call would have been preferred.
Discussion boards are a great tool to use in online learning as it gives students the ability to learn from other classmates while establishing a relationship similar to face to face classes.
There must be a teacher student connection even in an online platform. Teachers should provide professional education and experience to students and students should be invited to post a introductional background on themselves for other classmates to review.
Online teaching platforms require thoughtful planning to provide instruction meaninful to the online learners in a structural manner that is easy to follow. It is important that you understand the platform in order to provide resources and instruction that is easy to follow.
