About me

Activity

As an Instructor, I see the reason someone takes a class, Is for the gaining of knowledge to get employment, or better their position in the their current job. When I step back and look closer, I see people taking classes as way out of getting employment. At times our system rewards those who are good at using flawed loop holes. These individuals can cause havoc with the groups that do want to learn and use the knowledge. Overall the ones that take the knowledge and succeed make my job very rewarding.

I have found that more times than not, I asked the question in a manner that was "over their head" and the "prompt" mode would come out in me. Once we were on the same page, I could ask more "what if" with more thoughtful answers from the students.
I find that student 40 and older can be self motivated, but younger students expectations are that the instructor tells me, shows me, and then does it for me, and i get the grade. They think that there is a short cut in everything that needs to be done. Unlike a video game, where if the die they have a reset button,we have to express the importance of there actions injuring someone at the end of the job.
One of the courses I instruct, creates lots of "banging" noises, causing some students to react violently. While most students make me aware up front, those that don't can cause haveoc with the rest of the class.

I try to use the WIIFM with students, asking, how much more $$$ could you make,by being better the the next guy. Some of us are motivated very differently and money plays HUGE factor in the day to day successes and failures of both instructor and student.
I believe that quailifing the student for the program would give the student a better chance to succeed. Now,you would need differnt levels of training, for those lacking any knowledge in the field of study, as you don't won't to eliminate students from participation.
During the course, little was mentioned about thrid party, in dealing with retention.
As a new instructor, how much involvement is needed on my part,in working with student services?
