I am thinking that I should give extra credit more as a tool for work that is outside and additional to the required work and not because they did an exemplary job.

I think this helps those students who may have had a tough time with the reading portion of the class and tees up the material that I present.

I try to never use the powerpoint slides from the publisher, they are totally disconnecting from the way I use adult learning principles in he class. I did like the way that the Harvard faculty use the whiteboard and I am a big fan of flipcharts to recognize students comments.
There are several assessment tools to assist the instructor in understanding what they do best with groups of peoples...my school uses Insights. I have taken and am certified in MBTI, DISC, and a host of others. This type of activity would be best served in an all faculty meeting

One way I do that is to talk about a contemporary problem that is in the news...it gets the student to think about what they hear in the news and it also keeps me in tune with their mindset as I go forward.

Objective tests tend to increase the chances of this happening. I try to use short answer and an example in my quizzes and tests
This happens each class I teach, after a couple of weeks I suggest tot he student that he/she may be affecting others who want to speak in class but are not having a chance because of them

I like the use of different colored paper when creating the course direction.
I look for key words from the text and also an example from their lives to see application
I have found that a short answer quiz each week allows the business student with some factual content. At Mid-term and at the final I use an essay format to expand their thoughts after a series of short answer quizzes.
