I find with the Gen Y students, they are constantly picking up cell phones in order to text, pulling up Facebook or other social media, etc., without even realizing they are being rude to their classmates or instructor. It seems that oftentimes the Gen Y student has a hard time separating themselves from technolgy, and it can hinder their learning experience and the learning experience of those around them. Again, Gen Y students can easily become obsessed in what is going on in their social world and easily lose focus in the learning environment. I completely agree that technology is… >>>

When dealing with the Gen Y students, I find they continually want instant feedback when it comes to testing. I have many students, and it takes time to correct all the tests we take on a weekly basis. Students are continually asking, "Can I get my results today?" or "Can I know whether I passed my test by the end of the day." I have no problem letting them know that it will take some time to grade all the papers and that I will get back with them as soon as I can. However, it does make the student… >>>

I have some students who work hard and go above and beyond to meet all the requirements of the course, while others only attempt to meet the very minium requirements, and still others do not even meet the minimum requirements of the class. This adds a lot of strees on not only the instructor, but it also adds stress to the students. Adult learners get easily frustrated when they are paying a lot of money for a class and doing all they can to succeed when some students are impedeing the productivity of the class because of their poor performance.… >>>

When I first became an instructor, I used to develop everything on my own. Then as time passed, at in-service training I started interacting with other online instructors and found they had material they used that could help me in accomplishing my tasks in a more efficeint time frame. I asked for copies of their material and looked at incorporating it into my systmes of teaching. I found that even though some were great methods, they just did not work for my particular style. So I have learned that there are great ideas and tools availiable to me and that… >>>

Motivating students is always an issue in the school environment.  When a student first begins a program, they are very excited and very motivated to get started.  Then as time goes on and life happens, they can become discouraged and then becomve very unmotivated.  I find it challenging at times in finiding what motivates a student in order to help them become succesful in their learning environment.  This course gave me some building-block ideas.

When my students are feeling discouraged because they are struggling with a particular lesson and they become very doubtful of their ability to perform and they start using language like, "I can't do this," I call that "stinkin thinking." I tell my students, "No stinkin thinkin in this classroom - I don't want to hear, 'I can't do this' I want to hear, "I am currently working on mastering....(then whatever it is they are struggling with). They always laugh at first, but I find it amazing how it always seems to change their attitude. Their body language also changes as… >>>

I enjoyed learning about the different learning styles of students in previous courses.  Course 113 gave a good overview about the different teaching styles of instructors.  I enjoyed learning about the most effective style of instructing in a classroom of adult learners.  It was interesting to sit back at analyize how I perform in the classroom and compare it to the descriptions discussed in the course.  Good course.

When an instructor takes over a class because of administration schedule changes and the class and teacher up to that point have had an excellant report and ongoing successful classroom experieince, what do you feel you be the most effective way to help the students transition in to the new class environment/style techniques of the new instructor?
