Activity

In my future practice, I will not only script out questions - but also include the responses I'm looking for. I plan to reflect carefully on student engagement and responses so I can fine-tune my lecture for future classes. 

I was shocked to reflect on questions I ask in my classroom to find I often use close ended questions to attempt to facilitate a discussion. I'm looking forward to expanding my questioning and using a greater percentage of open ended/comprehensive questions next semester. 

Classroom preparation only goes so far. I must remain flexible with the schedule but plan meaningful activities to facilitate learning. I also know to acknowledge my mistakes with transparency, humor, and a solution. 

In previous semesters, I have struggled to engage with silent students. I have been an instructor to individuals who will not even greet me in return to my individual hello. I plan to facilitate engagement by fostering individual mentorships with silent students and use smaller groups to increase engagement with the material.

I am looking forward to utilizing the 'Minute Papers' in my classroom. This will help students make connections in an inviting manner. I plan to use a ball as a talking stick to add some movement in the classroom.

I have learned that setting clear goals and expectations early on will ease the minds of students and faculty. Creating an environment where students can listen, learn, and walk away with a greater understanding of the course is essential to build success.
