I've learned ways to engage students online. I think the most important is to make it as enjoyable as possible by including subjects or points of view the student is interested in. It is also really important to have straight-forward and easy to understand directions, so the student is not overwhwelmed and gives up.

It's important to keep in mind student's race, religion and culture. It could have an effect on their education.

Adjust assessments to meet ELL needs.

Use metacognitive and social/affective strategies to help teach ELLs.

It can take many years for students to catch up to apporpriate proficiency. It is important to create a network of encouragement.

It's important to understand ELL different needs and how they learn best.
