@elizabeth617 : I require them to slip out to the hall if they have an emergency call or text. I also tell them if they keep slipping out they will have to go homoe as this is to distracting to the others. I often catch them texting under the table, I call them on it right there and if it happens again they are dismissed for the remainder of the day. Usually only take one to hget caught. Great insight

How many of us are truely open to new ways of doing things? Many people are a closed and resistant to any and all change. Most of the older instructors are afraid of new technology, especially if they are not given direct trainining on new equipment such as computers and training aids. How MAN CAREER SCHGOOLS ACTUALLY UPDATE THEIR INSTRUCTOR TRAINING YEARLY? Most technical schools have no or very little money for training that is why we are doing this online training that has nothing to do with what we teach. Any thoughts?

Adult Learner's dilemma

this is a often occurance for those with families and who are working a full time job, many of them fallbehind and cannot see a way out. I for example have had to stay up all night to get assignments in on time for a college course adn it makes for a long day teaching you class when you have been up all night studing for exams.

I agree your motivation and energy is transfered tothe class and even the most dry die hard na sayers will fall in and learn. Bear in mind there is always one or two who dont want to learn and cant wait to leave,

New generation of students

Is it just me or has the last threee years brought in a new generation of learners? For me in my department the attitude and intensity of the new students has weaned a little the need for knoweledge is not as strong. Many are only here using the GI bill or dads money to get out of the house. They seem more interested in talking and texting or video play on the phone. I had to dismiss 10 student in three weeks for texting and gaming in class. Of the ten many were either turning in incomplete papers or trying… >>>

Challenging Students

I like the idea of letting the student evaluate the process i do this on friday i do what is good and what is bad it gives the students an ear for them to vent on waht they liked and what they did not like. I believe it gives thema sense of owner ship in making the class better for the future.

Changes with Today's Student?

many today do not realize the amout of money they are borrowing to get the education and how long it will take to pay back. The call mom for more money and then blow it on junk. The also tend to memeorize patterns and not the material. If i give them schematic they memorize it and then if i draw it in reverse on the last week of class the cannot differentiat the components many identify the components as they were not what they do and how they work and follow the flow.
