I have learned that rubrics are a grading tool. These still have to be interpreted by instructors. If I have had a particular student in the past and have my own expectations of what this student is capable of would I score them with needs improvement even though this might be exemplary for a different student?

I understand the absolute need for rubrics, I usually assign points based on criteria. Unless there is some kind of absolute grading scale who judges between good and needs improvement. Everyone has room for improvement. To me those are too ambiguous especially if you are dealing with students that may be special needs.

I have learned that putting a name to something I have been doing for years can be quite confusing.

I have used rubrics my whole career in teaching, the way it is explained here is far too confusing. The courses I teach are more analytical than creative. I have definitely learned to keep it simple.

Communicating positively with students can help get your point across without creating stress. Having empathy will help you communicate without putting too much stress on the student.

Technology is critical in the online environment. Instructors will probably stick with pc's or laptops but students will use several methods including phones. Software and LMS have to let you deliver online content in a meaningful way, including a virtual classroom.

I didn't realize online learning started so early. Technology has completely changed education. Online education is very competitive. I didn't realize employers have a positive attitude towards online degrees.

There are different factors that effect retention. We need to develope a good working alliance with our students. Be open and genuine and not judgemental. Be responsive.

I have learned steps to keeping students engaged. Not all students percieve directions in the same way. Break up the course into smaller chunks. Efficient and Effective feedback, keep it positive.

It can be difficult if an instructor has a certain personality trait and students don't. Be flexible, that can be difficult but to be an effective instructor you have to be. Have options for projects.
