Faculty can help students increase their comfort level in the classroom by using humor and engaging students. When ELL students are more comfortable in a classroom, they have more skill in using English.

It may take years for English Language Learners to master the English language.

It's important to hire caring faculty. When they start teaching, the curriculum should allow for active learning including group work.

I appreciate the 8 step process for meeting with students. It's important to prepare in advance when you can. I also like the focus on listening to the student. That is so critical before trying to help solve their problem.

Students need a good relationship with a faculty member who cares about them. They also need to receive good service. I will make sure that my colleagues and I provide friendly and responsive service to students.

It's important to remember that retention is everyone's responsibility. Often, admissions is blamed for not recruiting the best students. Instead of blaming one department, we all can take accountability for student retention. We need to determine barriers for retention and provide support for at-risk students.
