Dear Colleagues:

I divide the class in groups of three and ask them to act like neighbors sitting in a real classroom.  They are encouraged to exchange emails and send me a copy if they so choose.  The messages do not have to be related to the class.  They get points for each message send up to a predefined maximum, usually not more than 1 percent of the grade.

Hi Michael:

I agree.  Rubrics are more suitable for essay and term paper type of assessment.  With mathematical assessment the grader has to infer intuitively how much the student knows and what must have gone through their mind when they made a particular error.

Hi Cathy:

I suppose you are referring to monitoring students online.  Most CMS these days offer detailed activity information on learners.  But I think it is important to go beyond statistics by gauging learner interest through the questions they ask and the way the interact with other learners.

Dear Colleagues:

Right now we are debating whether online learning will replace traditional learning.  Imagine, if a third modality of learning is invented using holograms, virtual reality or brain to brain transfer of knowledge through some presently unimaginable technology.  In that case online learning will be described as "traditional" learning.  Learning as means of delivering value to the student will take whatever form that is available and popular.  In the Indian tradition of scriptures, art and music knowledge is still transferred orally from a guru to a disciple.  There are books and CDs available that teach Indian classical music… >>>

I once saw a cartoon depicting a dog typing on a computer keyboard.  The caption said in an online class they don't know that you are a dog!

But seriously, someone who wants to cheat wil do so in any format of class.  Papers can be plagiarized as easily in a traditional class as in an online class.  Unauthorized collaboration can also happen on or off line.
