Getting employees involved in work problem solving can make people feel the positive effects of their contribution. However, it takes a skilled and patient facilitator to get beyond the belly aching and negativity that can be generated.

My son accepted a restocking job at a local electronics company warehouse when he had just graduated college. He had loans to pay and figured the job would temporarily keep him financially afloat until he could find a job in his computer graphics profession. Each evening he came home with stories and conversations he had with colleagues who basically had dead end full time jobs. He had long exchanges with George, the fellow in the stall next to him. I am extremely frustrated with the lack of sonography professionals in the higher management capacity of Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs. Many individuals have radiology and or education degrees. While most of them earnestly attempt to do what is best, many have no idea how labor intensive and critical thinking essential this imaging profession is. I am no longer in hospital sonography management because of this. When I hear managers above sonography program directors say, oh it is just like X-ray or radiography, my reply is,"walk a mile in our shoes". It isn't as though they are poor managers. Problem solving through brain storming can often lead to bickering and disagreements within a group. It is better to start small, than add others from the organization after certain goals are established. The leaders need to have good interpersonal skills to keep the group focused.

Feedback and other management techniques require a proactive positive attitude. Handle matters sooner than later and let people know you want sensible input, not bellyaching. Seek solutions and study the effects. Last of all, don't be afraid to announce that a proposed solution isn't working. Be receptive to trying new ideas. Don't be afraid to abandon a course of action which isn't fulfilling the defined objectives of the root cause analysis.
