Trying to "make the connection ", I need to find some common interests with the students to them feel more at ease during the admission process. 

I have learned that I need to be more patient and let the other person fully finish their statement so I completely understand.  Follow up with a few open ended questions to show I did hear them and fully understand. 

I've learned that not only your tone but your facial expressions,  body language and attitude deeply effects how a person perceives you. This can cause someone to feel misunderstood or even negative about how they respond to you.
