Most important topic I learned in this section was that in case of a student has opted out of the institution’s release of Directory Information, it is important that the record protection is managed for all departments that may use this—such as a marketing department managing a Facebook page, a school newspaper, or anywhere that such Directory Information is regularly released.

Under FERPA, students have the right to challenge a record that they think is not accurate.  I also learned that certain information is restricted and should not be disclosed to the student, which may require redaction to protect the confidentiality and privacy of other parties referenced in the document(s).  I learned from this module that FERPA allows an institution 45 days to comply with a student’s request to review their records. This provides sufficient time if it is necessary to pull together educational records from different sources, redact information about other students, or research specific records questions requested… >>>

In this module i have learned that students must receive notification of this information at least annually, but the distribution method is not specified. Institutions may include it with registration materials, incorporate into a student handbook or other publication, or send via email or regular mail.  I also have learned that the Directory Information is established by the institution and may include items generally not considered sensitive including:

In this module I have learned that Educational Institutions are required to provide annual notification to students and written permission is required to disclose students' educational records, with some exceptions.  I also have learned that in case of student request to access their educational record, the institution has 45 days to comply with requests to access educational records.  As well as only those with a legitimate educational purpose should have access to any specific Educational Record.
