Competency-based learning can be hard to evaluate due to the fluid and diverse nature the learner will demonstrate their understanding and ability to apply and correlate the skills and knowledge in a career-realistic situation. This is why it is crucial that the instructor provides clear directions and explanations on the evaluations, use rubrics to identify the different areas of assessment and levels of proficiency. Lecturing, a more traditional method of instruction, may be able to convey knowledge to large groups of learners but lacks the incorporation of learning styles and application of the knowledge being assessed later on. Identifying student's learning styles and tailoring lessons to allow the learner to best demonstrate their understanding through multifaceted learning styles is critical. Although, lab setting learning can be a challenge, accommodating both the learner and instructor using online labs sometimes makes it more probable for all learners to practice and demonstrate their knowledge and skills associated with a specific area/standard of learning.

Although it can be challenging making scenarios/assessments that incorporate the higher-order thinking skills associated with Bloom's Taxonomy, the result will be a more authentic assessment of the students ability to apply the knowledge and correlate it with real life applications they will experience in their industry.
