How do we identify all the students who are posing a risk? I feel like sometimes there is a disconnect between admissions and education. I had one student tell me that he only picked his program b/c the admissions rep told him he would get bored in another program. It's essential to have a strong working relationship with admissions.
I often find that after I have been presenting for a few minutes many of the students start to doze off or look off. I know what I am showing them isn't the most interesting thing in the world, but what do you do when you get that really quiet and non-interactive group?
How do people incorporate other students into their orientations?
I am very active in the orientation for our students, and I always wonder about those students who come in with their children, or show up late because they don't have the support they need. I always make a point to go and speak with them, but sometimes students are frazzled. What is the best way to approach students like that from the very beginning?
I have been struggling with a student who has a lot of things going on outside of school that are getting in the way of his education. We had to have a serious heart to heart about focusing on himself and putting away his issues when he walks through the door. I have been struggling with how to get him to focus on particularly bad days. He drifts off and I catch him on Facebook when he should be working.
