Police Officer for over 18 years with a M.P.A. in Public Administration and Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.  Currently assigned as an assistant team leader(Training Coordinator) for the Berk County Emergengy Response Team(SWAT).

 

  Been teaching college level courses since 2006.

Activity

Early in my Police Career I came across a training Sgt. who always reiterated that there are no dumb questions. Mostly this was a safety issue, since we are working with some equipment that could be dangerous if not used correctly. I always encourage and tell this to my students to ease their fear of asking questions. I want them to engage me as I engage them. I believe this promotes learning.

In my many years of schooling I always appreciated the instructors who used many different approaches to getting the material across to the students. Lecture, Power Points and other visual aides, Guest Speakers, round table discussions is the approach I utilize. I attempting to reach all the different learning styles out there so everyone has a fair shot at grasping the material.
I do, however make sure I correct any misinformation they receive from other sources regarding the types of jobs that are attainable when they graduate.
Students must realize that their school is not going to land them that big first job! It is the students work ethic, and ability that goes with their education that contributes to their "hire-ability" in the working world. Schools that mislead students into thinking that they are going to get them that first job are basically "ripping off" the student.

I still believe there are many schools out there that are using deceptive practices such as promising jobs and even job leadfs to potential students. I use my field as an example. I have been a Police Officer for almost 20 years and teaching in the field for over 7 and i am amazed how often students come up to me and are convinced that they will be starting out as a detective or an evidence technician (CSI) right out of school.
