Try to eliminate any fear the students may have with doing the work, espically tests / exams. Try to add things to help make it more fun and engaging plus will help promote the work being completed on time.

Add and use feedback to help evaluate course material. Are the students able to understand the subject matter? 

Learn how to be flexible. Some students have no problem completing work on their own while others will need more guidence.
