After learning the learners, you adjust your teaching styles but then you still need to adjust as you go through the course! It's a never-ending cycle! Students learn differently with different topics especially in math.

First day - fun days! I love getting to know my students! This is where we will chat, and everyone will get to know each other and myself included! I love telling my students about my life experiences - it shows them I am and was in the same place they are today! If I can do it, they can do it!

I have actually watched some teachers teach with and without a plan. I observed the different behaviors from the students. Students can tell when a teacher isn't prepared. Be prepared!

It noted in one of the readings: It has been said that no one can motivate you to do anything, you have to do it yourself. While this global statement is true in the broadest sense, an instructor can certainly create opportunities for students to motivate themselves as they move through their courses. --> I love motivating students! Good stuff in this section!

Would be awesome if we can get all students to meet or be:

Independent.
Willing to take initiative.
Persistent and eager to learn.
Disciplined.
Confident.
Desires to learn more.
Able to organize time.
Develops plans for completion.
Enjoys learning.
Remains goal oriented.

Unfortunately not all are, and we have to guide to get there. We can doooo it.

When advising please make sure you understand their degree paths and what's needed for them to be successful. I hear it all the time that student advisors were unsure of some things related to their students they are advising.

Nonverbal stuff that should be part of good practice:

Things to keep in mind:

  1. Clear a space on your desk so all attention is focused on the student.
  2. Do not be tempted to look at other things, including documents, a computer screen, or a cell phone.
  3. Arrange chairs in a small circle and/or come out from behind a desk.
  4. Don't stare but make eye contact during the entire conversation. The listener should focus on the speaker about 80 percent of the time.
  5. In most cases, the student should do most of the speaking.
  6. Students will understand that you're giving a
  7. >>>

Good stuff to keep in mind and be aware of:

  1. Listens attentively.
  2. Communicates in the student's style whether it be in person, by phone, or using technology.
  3. Treats students fairly and equally.
  4. Creates a close interpersonal relationship with a student to minimize any negative effects.

Key to what I read:

The institution itself can contribute to low retention in a variety of ways. Students with disabilities who cannot find help might leave in frustration. A student suffering economic distress may not be aware of the many avenues of financial aid available. A basic lack of information- whether accessed in person, by phone, or by website- can inhibit a student's road to success.  --> something we all should be aware of!

I have had students record my lessons w/o my permission. Always make sure you give them permission to record your lectures ect.
