Thanks for the great information posted here!  I have taught online for only a brief time and I have learned (the hard way) about how the 'human factor' (like you previously stated) greatly comes into play.  I've found that if the student has an issue with something in the classroom or not understanding something, that picking up the phone and discussing the issue gives a sense of humanity, rather than just 'someone who doesn't really care.'   That short phone call gave us both human qualities and helped both of us!
