Like with anything, there are a lot of buzzwords concerning the LGBTQ+ community so I especially appreciated the video explaining the differences of gender.

This quote, "Help students help themselves. When you cultivate a strong sense of community within your class, you empower learners to become self-reliant and self-supporting- as individuals and as a group. Remind them that they can go to one another for extra help, to share resources, or just hang out and de-stress." is incredible advice.  Also, the 5 Keys (both sets) contain such good information that I feel like posters need to be made for the wall in the career center.

I like the idea of interviewing the interviewer, so to speak.  For example, asking about the previous person who filled the position and learning from their mistakes, if they made them, is an amazing tip.

I may be dating myself, but I was always told to have a 1 page resume with references available but not on it.  I am learning now this is no longer the case. I wonder, if employers only look at a resume for <2 minutes, why should it be longer?

The best 2 pieces of advice I will relay to my students from this module are "Google yourself!" and job shadowing.  It is important for students to see the day-to-day activities of their future career.

I appreciate that this module provided examples of good emails.  I find the detailed examples to be very informative, as well as they provide me with a template of an ideal response that I plan to use in future emails.  Since email is difficult to read in the voice of the writer, I find I am misunderstood regularly and this has helped me see why.

As I read this module, the term "de-escalation" kept going through my mind.  When students are looking for easy solutions, it's important to help them picture a realistic goal and path for achieving it. I can serve as a cheerleader, sounding board, or motivator.

I feel like these concepts are great but somewhat unrealistic.  I have found that when I make mistakes it often builds a rapport with my students because they see a humanistic quality.  While these methods are meant to make us more approachable, I feel like for some it would seem disinginuine. While I do feel like I am an active listener, I also respond in a way that will prevent my students from feeling judged but sometimes you have to give them news they don't want to hear, such as, "I am sorry you are failing and the instructor is… >>>

Whether career coaching or advising on classes, looking at the entire student is important. Their past, present, and future experiences impact their perception, as ours do, and form biases and misunderstandings.
