I always include a thorough discussion about social media in all computer classes.

Students do seem to be well-informed about the downsides of social media.

I'm always impressed with what they bring to the discussions

Depending on the course, I will conduct a business meeting with the students and allow them to input their ideas and concerns regarding the major assignments. Moreover, we pick due dates together as this allows the students to feel secure in their assignments. The goal is to reduce the stress and anxiety of the assignment; thereby, increasing the outcome which is learning!

I find that when I utilize technology in class or out of class, my Millenial students produce better outcomes.  They seem to be tuned into technology and embrace the learning better thru it.

For example, if I ask students to read the chapter, maybe half will; but, if I ask the students to review the new chapter and post a discussion on Engrade...most all of the students will complete the assignment.

@wscottpc : I agree, it would be like trying to bake a cake without the directions!

@miriamb :I would like to add that there are degrees of confrontation.  My answer was for the most disrespectful kinds that might involve fighting, cursing, etc.  Mild confrontations can be handled with soft skills like trying to find out what the student's problem is.

@miriamb :I ask the student to leave the classroom.  You have to preserve the rules that you set the first day.

Although, I have had to contact administration to help me get the students out because they may refuse to leave.

It is a tough situation and each one is different.  Good luck!

When you are having a really good teaching point, you have to be aware of students becoming saturated with material or just plain loosing their interest. Sometimes when you are in the moment of teaching and moving along in a topic you are so comfortable with, it is hard to redirect yourself back to student attention spans. I constantly work on this.

If you do not incorporate relevance into the preparation and the delivery of the lesson,  students have difficulty connecting to the content material.  I spend alot of time incorporating relevance.  For example, I teach Finance and I had a long career as a stockbroker.

The students really enjoy when I bring in my collection of vintage stock certificates.  We discuss what they mean, how you received them, how you redeemed them, etc.  Then, when we get to the chapter in the book on stock, they have a connection with relevance.

This whole process adds to my instructional expertise and my… >>>
