I beleive it is important for the instuctor to get the students involved in the lesson.  In bringin a lecture I have been know to incorporate some funny things or real world expereince into the learning that way students feel that the lessons are not jut "book" but thing really do happen

When I taught ground course;

I used to have students  that were so busy with being on the social networks, instead of learnign the lesson, so what i did  i started to walk around the class room, and began to involve those students in the discussion by making it very funny, and interesting and I spoke in the ling that they understood. then I would relate this to the lesson, and I also bring in real world in the class room.

I have taught face to face and now I am teaching online.  You are correct the challenge is to keep the student engaged.  I have been in healthcare for 25 years and when I give a lecture I do bring in REaly world expereince into the class room, and some personal but just enough that is partaining to the lesson.  This help  to make the lesson exciting,  the students sem to participate more in the class roomm discussion.
