I especially liked  the questions: What is the career path for people who take this job?  I added that one to my list. I was feamiliar with most of the othre questions.

I was familiar with HIPAA and the USA Patriot Act, but this section introduced me to the Solomon Amendment, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and SEVIS.  It makes sense that under the Patriot Act any helpful information must be released when investigating a terrorist act. This module brought to light that there is a lot of overlap on protecting an individual’s privacy but there is also the potential for many exceptions depending on the agency and the circumstance.  In other words, keeping up with FERPA and any exceptions is important.

I learned that FERPA rights do not continue after death and the records of deceased students may be released. Living past student require writting consent to release.  I also learned that employees that are also student do not automatticaly have access to their own records.  They must go through the FERPA process like other students.

This course has helped me learn more about FERPA guidelines, who you can release student records to and under what conditions.  I remember grades being posted on walls back in the day.  I can see how this would definitly be a violation of FERPA today.

I found it helpful to learn exactly what qualifies as an Educational Record and what does not qualify as an Educational record.  Like some others here I found it ineresting that the Sole Possession notes don't qualify as a confidential Educational Record.  Also that a school official may not actually be employed by the school.

I learned the importance of feedback and staying in touch with both graduates and employers.  Great idea that graduates who have found jobs could be a resource at their company to let you know of jobs for new graduates. Also surveys are important to send to employers to keep your training effective and currant.

I learned the power of networking and engaing with associations in your industry matter even for entry level job seekers.  Also getting and reviewing a copy of th  Employee Manual is important before accepting a job to learn about corporate culture and various company expectations of their employees.

I learned about the importance of building a job resource library, to make it available to students, and what are some good resources it should contain.  I learned about the importance of Job Fairs and various types of Career Workshops on various topics that will help the student their job search.  Some example are resume writing, interview, networking, and salary negotiation.

I learned about best practices to get started setting up an effective Career Services Department and how the Career Services Department  contributes to the overall success and reputation of the university.  It is a strong influence for new students to know that past students were able to find good jobs in the field in which they studied at your university. Also the benefit of joining professinal associations in their industry.
