Summative Evalution

It was good knowing the difference between Summative and formative…it was terrific in terms of thinking of supporting student learning throughout the course versus assessing student knowledge at the end of the course.

Olga,
To measure learning, we can (and should) check for understanding all along the way. Usually to assign a grade, an exam (or group of assignments) are needed for the summative assessment to occur.

"Formative" and "summative" really seem cold and mechanical— but they do make me feel smarter!

Ann,
"Check-up" and "successfulness" might be better named adjectives, eh?

I had an instructor in college who did a summative evaluation of sorts. He told us how we did than preceded to tell us whether or not we could actually make it in our field. It was incredible hurtful, and it stuck in my head for a long time. I wish he had cut that out and talked about how we could have continued our studies and become better .

Josh,
How awful -- judge, jury, and executioner! It would be nice if we were memorable to our students, but not this version of memorable. I believe offering our advice, suggestions and ways to improve performance encourages students, and we ought to incorporate some authentic way to do this when discussing status or giving opinions.
