powerpoints

I love using powerpointe in my class. I also print them up - it really helps my student to able to listen more to me and just jotting down notes as a speak

Hi Cara:
The good and not so good about PPT print-outs:
Good - the student has access to the slides, can focus on the speaker rather than trying to write and listen, and has a permanent record for future study.

Not so good - students get distracted by looking ahead in the slides, not paying attention, "estimating" how long the teacher is going to talk, focusing on previous slides they might not understand thus missing the current slides.

Also, good PPT slides should only have summarized bullet points for most of the material (except illustrations, photo's, charts, graphs, quotes). The bul of the lecture is contained in what the teacher discusses, so although slides are helpful, having students rely on them too much may not help them as much as they think.

I enjoy using powerpoints as well, I try to keep the information at a min so they don't get distracted. I also like to print it out with 3 slides on a page so ther is room for them to add any additional comments we make regarding the information on the slides. I have heard that the students really like to have additional room on the slides to add information.

Hi Melanie:
Some teachers have two set of PPT slides for the same lesson. One set is what gets printed and is used for notes. The other is the teacher's presentation, one that has much more information for the students to view, to discuss, to think about, and to take notes from. Their version is much briefer, but allows notetaking and encourages students to listen to key notes in the lesson.

Might try it and see what you think. It's the difference between thoughtful reflection vs. spoonfeeding information.
