I have used youtube videos on computer devices/components that are very expensive for school to have; also used ebay to show different models or variations of devices students are being trained on.
Hi Kathi:
That's very important. But what if the student gained a better understanding of the concepts you've discussed in class by watching something (supplementally) on youtube?
One thought is this - if the main idea is that the student learns, then we should use anything and everything to make that happen.

Hi Leslie:
Like you pointed out, the internet (and thus, youtube) can be a great resource - when used effectively.
Another potential issue related to this discussion is that the internet is not always valid or credible.

Hi Kenya:
Students definitely need to know where to find information in every place they possibly can. That said, electronic resources like youtube can be of benefit, as long as it's not taking the place of a traditional resource.

Hi Kerry:
I agree! As long as it doesn't take the place of traditional resources, and is supplemental, I think all electronic resources can be of benefit.

Hi Antonio:
Electronic resources can certainly be a boon to instruction, provided they don't replace traditional models of instruction alltogether, and are from a reputable original source.

Hi Carolyn:
Agrred - the resource needs to be credible and valid. Something else we might say about electronic resources like youtube is that they should never replace the traditional resource as the main teaching strategy. Electronic resources should only supplement teaching.

Hi David:
Electronic resources like YouTube can be a great supplement to normal lesson plans, as long as they don't become the replacement, or the norm.
The key word is "supplemental".

Now that the students are using computers and podcast to get information. The class room needs to be as modern so the student stays interested. By using computer tools as guest speakers to help bring informational points to the class. The students can also see that they can use computers for resources too. It’s a win for all.

i feel the same about the type of students we get at our school, they come in very tech-savy. we teach a technical skill so that is actually a desirable thing. i find that instructors need to use tools like youtube (when appropriate) to "speak their language" sometimes. we have many popular social media sites blocked so students don't get too distracted while using their own computers while at school.
We can't use Youtube Videos at my school
Hi Jeanette:
In this day and age, especially with younger students, using you tube can be a great motivator, or an activity that might refresh a relatively dull topic.
