get attention of the students
instructors needs to change their course of teaching and study materials to bring attention of the students.
Bring in examples of differnt events that happened to you while you where and student or health care professional. you will capture their attention with these stories and it helps them understand material.
I agree. I tell them how I was as a student and about the times I struggled to pay attention, get to class, and complete assignments and the after that, I make sure I tell them that finishing my masters is my proudest moment. Most students are there to improve their lives, and I try to remind them why they are there as much as I can too. Bringing in guest speakers who have struggled and then went on to be successful is a good tool to keep them focused. I'm lucky to have a friend who is a Chiropractor that experienced a lot that my students experience. And I'm grateful that he is able to speak to my classes.
Hi Shah:
Interesting classes help keep students attention and focus.

Hi Christopher:
Those are great ideas. Something else that may work as well are asking a question to the whole group, then picking a "random" student from the group to answer the question. If you have enough questions, you can make sure each student participates.

You have to relate to topics students are interested in. Most students are interested in the same movies, singers, bands and tv shows. If you can relate the topic to something the student is comfortable with you will keep their attention.
Carol,
Right! The best attention getters are those things the student already knows and can relate to. As for course content, an emphasis in "what's in it for me" can help focus students attention on why the information will them in their studies and their job readiness and their sustained employment following completion of their program.

Start off a class with a "Question of the day" this may or may not include the subject to be taught that session. At the end of the lesson, Repeat the same question and watch the entire class get the correct answer.
Sherri,
Great technique. This involves participation, integrates elements of the lesson to be learned, a preview and a review, and helps cement the information into long term memory. I like this idea.
