knowing all involved
Starting my new classes for the term, I often start by introducing myself along with my credentials and experience. I then ask everyone to introduce themselves and tell the class a little bit about themselves because it gives me a better idea of you is in my class. I also ask students to describe themselves using words, actions or verbal cues. By using this activity I can better undertand what learning types I am dealing with.
Kathleen,
It is a unique idea to allow them to describe themselves, with a choice of words, actions or verbal cues. This is a great way to assess the personality types of the students in your group.

I find that this works really well... I do something similar when I have new students come into my class. It's not only informative for us as instructors, but "breaks the ice" between new and more experienced students.
I also utilize this method on the first day of the module especially when teaching students for the first time. I also use this time to go over the syllabus and classroom policies. This allows them to have a better comprehension of the required expectations. I answer any questions they have and use this as a preliminary gage to note any students who are "withdrawn".
