We instruct antique motorcycle restoration in the class I'm involved in. The students have fun using the old mechanical meters on electrical problems, but they can easily see that using modern, state of the art test equipment not only is more accurate, it's also easier to use
eric,
How do your students respond to the adopted material (from the vendors) that is implemented into the course? Do students provide input on the acquisitions of new technology for the program?
Tremayne Simpson
Sean,
How do your students respond to the technology that you implement in the class?
Tremayne Simpson
I agree the classes Iteach are always being filled with info from venders peaple that serve in the industry and online data .
Erin,
These are great methods for integrating technology into your courses. I have also use classroom blogs as an innovative method for student interaction and participation.
Tremayne Simpson
Adding technology that is easily dipslyed from our diagnostic computers is very helpful when cementing individual content
Martha,
You have found effective ways to integrate technology in your classroom. Whenever possible, I make sure to post questions to the discussion board, because it enables the students to interact (with course content) outside of the classroom.
Tremayne Simpson
Caren,
Do your students communicate on the course discussion board of the student portal? It is a great way to continue to the course discussions, outside of the physical classroom.
Tremayne Simpson
TERESITA,
In addition, students appreciate pedagogical innovations and the new technologies that are used in the classroom could enhance their learning experience. However it is important that we do not overwhelm them with too many technological enhancements, because it could cause a little confusion during the lecture.
Tremayne Simpson
Integrating technology into the course will help students understand the subject matter better and with ease. technology is an imporatnt part of our dauly life nowadays.
Since my classroom is a sewing studio (fashion design) I am already using technology to teach all my courses. These are sewing machines, sergers, buttonhole makers, hemming machines, electric cutters, industrial irons and ironing boards, and a computer with creative suite to help students in creating presentations, printing, and conducting research to complete their assignments. Beyond the classroom experience, I make sure that my lesson plans include assignments that require for students to do research on fashion websites, trend forecasters, and I also try to create (graded) online discussions where it is mandatory for everyone to participate and interact outside the classroom setting.
I encourage the students to utilize the internet when doing research on food. Sometimes we even look up answers to their questions together. We also utilize powerpoints and a student portal.
I believe there are many ways to integrate technology. Instead of writing a paper, they could do a powerpoint presentation. I've also done "webquests" before. In place of me lecturing on a topic, I will have students do a sort of scavenger hunt online to find the information and then we come back together as a class to discuss.
Desirae,
This is a great observation. Sometimes it is best to email or post the links to the students for later review. Students can lose focus easily if they are presented with too many examples and changes of pace.
Tremayne Simpson
Desirae,
I agree that there is a multitude of internet content that can be used to enhance course content, however it is important to be aware of the institutional copyright and "fair use" policy. For example, my school has prohibited "YouTube" from being used in our courses (due to the uncertainty of copyright for the various works) however, we have found other alternatives that is safe to use with our lectures.
Tremayne Simpson
Jeanne,
In addition this activity can adhere to multiple learning styles and enable your student to apply course concepts.
Tremayne Simpson
John,
Do you require your students to use these tools or do they elect to use them on their own?
Tremayne Simpson
Some innovative ways of adding technology to the classroom would be the use of internet, internet readings/articles, trending/hot-topics from the news or entertainment section of newspapers, magazines, and or even talk shows. In my fashion courses we also use discussions from "Fashion Police", and E! Online. Overhead projectors, social media websites, and cell phone are all great technology tools for engaging your students into the class topics.
Technology is always advancing, and its "fashion forward" to be on point and abreast of all changes in technology. The use of Adobe photoshop and Illustrator is one of the key components to building a fashion portfolio. So the utilization of CAD based programs are vital in teaching any design program.
Crystal,
I agree that smart boards are excellent learning tools. As I mentioned earlier in the post, I find that they are very helpful because the information can be saved and posted to the student portal or sent out to the class for notes on the lecture.
Tremayne Simpson
I utilize video case files and other visual outside resources for training both staff and students. Having students follow up the lesson with a visual quiz or questionaire can help to identify areas in which the information was not understood. It will also provide additional assistance in their learning.
