Over the years, I have taken it upon myself to create my very own lecture notes based on each chapter covered in the textbook. I then proceed to hand out copies of these notes to students as they arrive to class. What I have noticed is that if students see how much an instructor is willing to go for their education, they will approach the course with the same level of responsibility and attention to detail. The result is higher grades on exams and more interaction during class participation.
Jose,
A very powerful statement. I will create my own lecture notes / outline. What I have discovered is my student will take additional notes from my handouts and class participation has improved.
I, too, have experienced increased class participation after distributing copies of notes. Much of the subject matter that is covered at our school is not to be found in textbooks. The curriculum content is being doubled. My current teaching assignments require my preparing the courses starting at step one. The introductory portions of the courses have gone well; my lecture notes are almost organizing themselves thanks to the school's access to the internet. My efforts have benefited greatly from the rapid access to information afforded by this resource and by guiding students to specific sites, I have been enabled to show them connections among concepts not otherwise readily available. Many students' efforts online have resulted in valuable additions to both the curriculum and coursework. I am also looking forward to utilizing the new smart board.
I believe that the instructor is in the best position to know according to the objectives of the class the material to cover and the easiest way to present it to the students without limiting the students to deep into it by reading the book ,and a good way to accomplish that is using the lecture notes.
