the importance of credibility
it is very important that students be able to trust everything you say to them as an instructor.
they are usually very disappointed if they find they cannot. unnecessary boasting only sets one up for ridicule. it is my experiencce that they are ususlly so thirsty for knowledge that they respect you so much and feel disillusioned when they find your information is deliberately incorrect.
Individuals in general have a thirst for knowledge. Students are inquisitive and come into class with the thoughts that we as instructors will present the information to them without falsification. I have found that being ready for any question and being able to answer questions regarding various topics keeps you on your toes. I want my students to have a great experience while in my class.
All this is true but I think it is also OK to occassionally admit to students that you don't know a particular answer. If the instructor admits this, they MUST then either immediately follow up on assisting the students to find the correct answer or provide the answer at a specified later date and time. I believe this greatly enhances instructor credibility and students learn they don't have to know everything and also how and where to find the correct answers or information.
Hi Darleen,
I agree with this method of supplying students with answers. We can't nor is it possible to know the answers to every questions raised. So by admitting it and having the students find the answer themselves or bring the answer to them the next class session everyone benefits and grows from having the question raised.

The first day of class I try to let my students know that I am not perfect and that I am okay with that. I beg them not to put anyone on a pedistal because it can be way too far to fall.
I also let them know that what I tell them is the truth. I explain to them that being able to remember lies is way too hard. The truth is always easier to remember.
Hi Becki,
Honesty, consistency and professionalism are all good characteristics to have as an educator. You are communicating and practicing these attributes which sets the stage for a positive experience by your students. Good points thanks for sharing them.

I agree 100%! I always use my "mistakes" as an example of what not to do, but also how to handle the consequences.
Hi Maryrose,
Good point. Our mistakes can be very effective teaching tools for our students. The good news for me is that I have a lot of mistakes to use as examples or maybe that is a bad thing.
Gary
I agree. Admitting that you don't know and answer and then proceeding to research individually or as a class shows them that there is always room to grow and that learning is a continuous process.
Hi Patricia,
Right you are. Students don't mind this a bit if you are honest with them. Just knowing you are working on the answer and then bringing it in at the next session is sufficient.
