When deciding which chapters or sections to include in the required reading, should one always strive for a mixture of theoretical and technical?

Right you are. Neither one is of value unless you have the other so the students need to know how to find the balance between theoretical and technical.

I think in a perfect world, you would have both. Some of the course I teach are very technical. I like to think, to some extent, that the instructor will compliment the text in class with theoretical ideas during lecture.
I try to teach my clinical in relation to the textbook administering patients with certain diseases processes as the chapters discuss.

I think so. While the knowledge is permanently growing, the goal of reading material is to provide useful information for practicing professionals. Topics should be updated and rewritten in a concise and accurate manner.
