Well said. This is why it is important to connect the content with the outcome of the course. They are going to school to expand their options as well as create a future for themselves, they need to be reminded of this frequently.

I think this is a great motivator, money is the number one reason people go out to work, if you put it in those terms they will be more willing to listen and follow-up!

Make a connection between that goal and the course content. Identify what they want out of the course in relation to the goal or goals. Do they want more money then show them how by learning the course content they can earn more money. Appeal to their basic needs and build from there.
