Back-Up Materials

I teach many clinical classes and I have found that the skills I am presenting can monopolize my time with individual students. When this occurs, I have found it most helpful to have on hand additional activities for my students that have mastered the skill and are ready to move on. This way, my students continue to learn and reenforce the skill with additional avenues of learning while not disrupting the rest of the classroom with behaviour born from boredom.

Christine,
Good planning on your part as you are making effective use of your students' time through your segmented instructional process. Every student gets to move forward in their learning as a result of how you are delivery your instruction.

I find that I incorporate back up materials mainly for the more advanced students. In any given class I may have students that have had only basic high school math, and yet others may have had collage level algebra or beyond. The extra material that I give to the advanced students keeps them challenged, while I focus a bit more with those who may need more attention. I also utilize the more challenging students to mentor their classmates. I have noticed that this builds a good bond between the students which enhances their learning experience.

Kurt,
This is a good way to customize your instructional delivery to keep all of your students engaged. You are helping all of the students to move forward in the class not matter what level they are operating at in terms of their experience and expertise.
