Preparing to adapt to learning styles

I have just completed ED103-Student Learning Styles. Surveying the class for learning styles is essential in preparing intructions.

I think it's important to have differnt learning styles for students. Some students feel that the text books provide more information than the power points. Everyone learns differently.

I prefer and learn easier by hands on. But I agree, everyone leans differently.

I try to make sure that there is a mix in the delivery to address the different learning styles whether auditory, visual, or kinesthetic (tactile). Speaking to them while using a visual such as Prezi along with a workbook can work well especially if they are given the opportunity to some form of hands on activity that helps build muscle memory.

Rick,
Good way to mix of your delivery and keep your students engaged. As a result you are appealing to the different learning preferences of your students while keeping the course moving forward.

I have great "PROPS" in my classroom.I find it easier to have the part in my hand and/or draw a picture on the board than to use a powerpoint and lazer pointer. This and eye contact seems to work best for me.

Rob,
Props are a winner when it comes to learning. The more examples and use of other senses the students can make the more they will be motivated to learn the course content.

Each person is different and therefore, I believe, I must always keep this in mind when preparing for a class.

Some people learn the best when they listen to someone explain something to them, others when they read it and some when they see it. I try to incorporate all this strategies in my classes since it provides a more comprehensive approach to the topic at hand. This way, I try to reach each of my students and accommodate their learning styles.

After I get to know each of them, I can also create projects specifically design for each of them depending on their abilities. This way I feel they are more engaged and make the best out of the information they are trying to learn and incorporate it into their lives.

LAURA,
Your approach is an effective one for the reasons you list. Students like it when they have options through with to use their learning preferences in a course. This way their engagement will be higher while their focus will be more intense in terms of course outcomes.
