first day

On the first day, I explain what I want from the students, but I turn the tables on the students. I make them present what is needed. They must explain to me and make me understand that they understand.

Oooh, I like that one! Almost tricky! Get the students to help give you their own analysis of what they know / or don't know.

This is a good whey to see what the want from you

That is a good method. Usually I might say, "Does everyone understand what I just went over?"

Next time I might tell the students now explain everything that is required of this course.

Hi David,
By having the students explain back to you what has just been covered you can get a clear picture of what they have learned. Glad to the information was of help to you.
