returning students

most of my students I've had in previous classes, so our first day of class we discuss any current events or changes in their lives, and then they need to mention any current events or local topics from the newspaper/journals, etc that are relevant to our topic.

I have many returning students also, but after reading this module I'm wondering if I should be quite so informal during subsequent classes. I see the value in having a set pattern of introduction and kick-off, and every course will be a little bit different, so I think I'll change my course.

Hi Gail,
This would be a great way to start a class by having students that you have had before. As I teach courses that have incoming students I have to start fresh each time and that involved getting to know them and they me. By having students you already know you could plan some great activities to get them settled into your course. The idea of the current events discussion is a good one.

When I have a number of returning students I provide an opportunity for them to introduce or discribe their instructor based on their previous classroom experience. It helps new students understand how I instruct based on other students opinions and I can fill in the blanks.

Hi Craig,
This is an interesting approach to start a new class. How do you set the stage for your students describing the previous classroom experiences to the new students?
Gary

I set the stage during the student introductions, having the students indicate which instructors in our program area (criminal justice) they have had. When they self identify as having been in my classroom before it leads to my request for their introduction of me.
