A first impression
A first impression can only be done the first time. It goes hand to hand with prepared and organized for class.
I don't think you can have a first impression in a class. Your students from the last class will let the new student know where your coming from.
Hi Nick,
I teach cohort groups so I have the same students several times and each time I start a new class of the cohorts I do something different to get them excited about the content of that class. These are "new" first impressions because they are different from the previous class. This strategy has worked really well for me over time.

I think so too, it is very important to get that first impression right for the first time because you will not going to have a second chance.
After teaching for a while, you will develop a certain reputation, good or bad, among your current and former students, which will be shared with other students.
However, I think that on the first day of class, these new and perhaps biased students will test the previous students' conclusions. There is still a window of opportunity for the instructor to change student thinking.
First impressions set the stage for the class. It is what you do after this impression that will carry the class through. Positive attitude toward your students can change this impression. A negative attitude can re-inforce this first impression if it is a bad impression
First impression is vital when setting the tone for the class. New students need to know what is in store for the upcoming class!
I think the first impression is valid because the new class will generate their own opinion regardless of old class.
