Meeting the class for the first time
I've been teaching for at least 10 years, but
I still get the jitters on the first meeting.
I know if I feel this way, so will the students
I always start by saying 'Welcome" and go from
there with the icebreaker: introduction of myself with a little background and then I have my class introduce themselves with a little background. I make the seating chart as they introduce themselves, so at the end, I can call them by name.
You are right on with having a list of things to do for that first meeting.
The first day always makes me nervous even if I have been teaching quite a while. Careful planning and preparation, plus some fun activities will save the day.
Ceola,
I have been teaching for longer than you and I still get the jitters as well. I always wonder what this group of students will be like and how I can make impact on their lives with the content I will be sharing. I think the jitters help me to stay fresh and excited about starting a new group of students. Good point, thanks for bringing it up.
Gary
Xin,
Good point and one we instructors need to remember as we get ready for the new group of students that are coming in.
Gary
I agree with your approach. In addition, I have each student when they introduce themselves give us a little of their background and why they are in the class.
Excellent point, Edward. I always find it helpful to begin the class with my background because the student can get a sense of who I am and a sense of my character. Conversely, I also find it helpful to have the students share some personal information for the same reason in addition to providing me with information that may help me interact with each one.
