First Day

On the first day of class is it adequate to jump into a subject or should it be more relaxed with a explanation of syllabus, and outcome to expect from the course?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Mark,
I think this depends on the length of the class. In my 50 minute classes I spend the first day on introductions, ice breakers, and reviewing the syllabus. With my three or six hour classes I do the introductions, etc. and the start into the topics because I don't want to lose that much time.

The first night of class I use an an introduction, or overview. After the introductions and all the housekeeping tasks I begin the first topic. This is generally a course introduction.
