lecturing style
How long should it take, on average, should I be able to decide what lecturing stlye works? All students are different, how do I decide on a common ground?
Craig,
There are several ways you can determine this. One, is to "read" the students in relation to how they are engaged in the class during lecture. If they are with you then the method you are using is working. Two, get feedback from the students to check for understanding of the key concepts. This will let you know if they are "getting it" in your class.
Third, change up your presentation style throughout your lectures. Have auditory, visual and tactile components of each lecture this way you will appeal to a variety of student learning preferences.

I often have my students share with me in a reflection on the first day of class what type of learning style they prefer...This helps me plan for my approach.
I like to use as many various techniques as possible. I will have students repeat after me...sometimes multiple times...I will have them write it multiple times!!! and Sometimes I will have them exercise hand motions or facial expressions while repeating after me...It is fun and I notice them exercising these techniques independently when studying or trying to recall something!
Any other suggestions?
Hannah,
You are on the right track with the strategies you are using. As for any additional suggestions I would add that you need to be a keen observer of your students. Their body language will tell you a lot about what their learning preferences are. You can quickly pick up your visual, tactile and auditory learners if you just watch how they respond when you are lecturing.
