Hi Patsy - Thanks for your post to the forum. When students self-assess they often take the results more seriously and work harder to achieve their goals. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I beleave this helps the students know where they stand in there studies or in there goals
Student self-assessments can be used effectively in the career college setting as a way for the student to communicate with their instructor. By rating their skills based upon a clear rubric, the student relays their impression of the depth of knowledge they have learned. They are also stating their ability to convert knowledge into practical skills. The student self-assessment is then a starting point for a discussion between the student and instructor to compare the outcome.
Hi Pavan - Yes, student self assessment does encourage students to set goals for themselves to better their performance. Best wishes- Susan
though not effectively applicable since every student is differnty in thinking and application, the self assesment can aid student to make a begining to assess ones learning and come to terms with the results and improve on it
gradually and seethe change over a period of time and achieve the set goals while altering them according to enhanced understanding
Hi Joanne- Thanks for sharing a very effective use of self assessment! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I used self-assessments when there was a high instance of failure or borderline passing on our tests. I asked students to evaluate their study time and the techniques they used to study each evening. We found out that most people did not study at all. They felt that they should be told exactly what each question on the test was and then study only that information. The post assessment discussion pointed out that in order to learn they needed both parts of the puzzle; they had to know the contenct and they had to learn how to apply it. The assesment made them think about what they could do differently and it allowed me to structure the end of class as a review and reminder to do the homework assignments.
Hi Trar- Thanks for mentioning an important point. Students need to know why the self-assessments are important and how they will be used to better their learning. Susan
Student self assessments can create an evaluation for students which makes them accountable for their actions in the classroom. Not only to themselves but also their goals. Being able to assess ones own work helps in creating a standard which a student can hold themselves accountable for. This helps in creating goals, and meeting those goals in their work.
I feel the student self-asssessments are important. When giving the assessments, I inform the students that my instruction is based on the assessments. I hope this ensures that students are honest in their respones. Their honesty helps me help them to be successful in both their education and work lives.
Hi Rhonda- Thanks for your post to the forum. I have had the same experience asking students to self assess. It really does seem that they know what they do not know! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Margaret - Thanks for your post to the forum. I especially like that your students also assess presentations as it enables them to utilize the cocepts that they have learned regarding what makes an effective presentation. Susan
I teach a speech and communications class at a culinary school. We have 5 projects and use a different assessment tool for each project. Students participate in assessing presentations based on a rubric, which is good practice for them.
Our final presentation is a cooking demo, and students conduct a self-assessment for the project. I find they are usually harder on themselves than I am, and I think they really consider the criteria and honestly grade themselves.
Students tend to be highly critical of themselves when it comes to academics--sometimes even more than I am. Ihave found when issuing essay grade, having the student suggest his own "grade" before I ever see it makes for some interesting dialogue. I often find them extremely unfair to themselves--but very thorough.
I also find that the student self-assessment reveals differences between where I think the student is compared to where the studet sees himself. If I notice that a few students are hazy on a certain concept, it also lets me know that I need to revise my method of teaching that material.
Hi Brian - Thanks for your post to the forum. Student self assessments are especially effective when they assess themselves at the beginning and then at the end of the class. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I think most of all, it will help them to realize just how much they have taken away from the course.
