repeat offenders

I have tried to stay away from repetition, however, I find that using it sparingly helps the students, rather that makes them feel like they are in a Kindergarten class.

I use it to emphasize key points, then just hit them now and again, (i.e. definitions that are critically important for them to know in order to think outside of the box).

James,
this is a good point that I want to emphasize: sparing use. If we use repetition for every point, it loses its effectiveness; its like highlighting the whole page. When we use repetition on those key ideas it will stand out more.

For the most part I have steered away from repetition and if I do it, it is in discise with different excercises, for different learners. However I am teaching a computer class this term and certain things that need to be memorized I have been emphasisng by repeating and they have been picking it up.
So knowning when to apply it might be best.

I like reinforcing a key concept by going over it several times but using different techniques. Notes on the white board, open ended Q&A, practical application in the lab etc...

I feel it is very important to repeat important points. Maybe even specifically saying to students, "this is important". once you say that you will see all pencils moving.

Zachary,
repetition really is a great aid to learning & so when we can emphasize these main points & ideas our students will benefit.

I agree that some repetition and -dare I say it-memorizing is at times needed for certain topics.
But,I also refer to the new word/concept occasionally during the class period by using it in different contexts. I ask the students to give me their own examples of say, a problem they have that can be solved with the new information-they seem to like this approach, as it ties the new information to their own experience.

I teach basic electric principals to young adults without any previous experience. I find that repetition from different angles is the only to try and get through.
